Abstract

1,260,021. Plasma torches. BRITISH TITAN Ltd. 20 Oct., 1970 [27 Oct., 1969], No. 52575/69. Heading H5H. In a plasma torch of the type in which the cathode 44 has an arc striking surface 45 of hemispherical shape with a central portion 46 of material which resists erosion during use of the torch, the anode 11 has a central axial passage 27, of length at least three times its diameter, and has at its inner end a part hemispherical cavity 26 in a member either integral with the anode 11 or separate therefrom. A retaining member 28 of polytetrafluorethylene is secured to the anode housing 10 (of metal) by bolts (not shown), and carries a gas injection device 30 for feeding gas through ceramic members 38, 39, into the passage 27. Portion 46 is preferably a zirconium metal insert in the cooled copper cathode 44, and the arc is struck between this insert 46 and the walls of the passage 27. Oxygen gas is heated and used for the vapour phase oxidation of titanium tetrachloride, to produce pigmentary titanium dioxide, in a separate reactor (not shown). The passage in the anode may gradually increase in diameter or be flared outwardly. Fig. 1, (not shown). The insert 46 may be a solid cylinder, e.g. of a carbide or nitride of zirconium, silicon or titanium. The cathode may be of silver or a copper/silver alloy. The anode is of copper, tungsten, silver, zirconium or a copper/silver alloy. The length of the anode passage may be up to 20 times its diameter. Various dimensions are specified. The tank can be used for heating gases other than oxygen, e.g. nitrogen, argon and helium.
