Abstract
1,171,593. Arc lamps. ERNST LEITZ G.m.b.H. 17 Jan., 1968 [20 Jan., 1967], No. 2576/68. Heading H1X. A plasma torch for spectrum analysis examination processes comprises a cathode 19 and an annular anode 11 disposed in a casing which is subdivided by two disc-shaped apertured arc stabilizers 6, 9 and 7, 10 into three chambers of which at least the two outer chambers are provided with tangential inlet apertures 29 and 31 for a protective gas while the centre chamber has a viewing aperture (not shown) in front of which a spectrum analysis examination device can be disposed. The anode 11 and portions 9 and 10 of the stabilizers are of carbon and are supported in apertures in hollow discs 6, 7 or 8 of copper or brass. The thoriated tungsten cathode 19 is surrounded by a brass ring 20 and held by a rod 17 sliding in an aperture in a metal disc 5 and an insulating guide tube 18. Tap water is passed in series through the discs 5, 6, 7 or 8 which are spearated by insulators 12, 13 or 14, e.g. of asbestos cement, the assembly being held between insulating discs 1 and 2 connected by links 3 and (4) (not shown). A D.C. supply is connected between the disc 8 and a lead 21 to disc 5, the arc being struck by depressing the rod 17 against the action of a spring 15 until the ring 20 contacts the anode 11. The protective gas may be argon. Material for analysis is introduced by an atomizer 28.
