Abstract
973,524. Arc plasma generators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 30, 1963 [Oct. 23, 1962], No. 40122/62. Heading H5H. In a plasma torch two electrodes 1, 11 are urged initially into contact by a spring 15 but are forced apart by the pressure of gas used to form the plasma, to strike the arc. Both electrodes are hollow and are water-cooled from sources 18, 24, and the outer one 11 has an aperture 12 which is initially closed by the conical tip 3 of inner electrode 1, which is sealed rigidly with casing 8. 22 is a container for water exhausted from electrode 1. Gas from a source 16 enters the inter-electrode space by ducts 14 arranged at an angle to an axial plane, causing it to move in a vortex as it forces the electrodes apart and escapes through aperture 12.
