Abstract

849,535. Electric arc plasma generators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 10, 1958 [March 11, 1957], No. 7590/58. Class 39(3). [Also in Group XXXIII] An arc is struck between electrodes 16, 17 supported by the end plates 30, 31 of a housing 10. Electrode 16 can be rotated and advanced manually or by an automatic servo. The housing is divided by a wall 34, and gaseous or liquid air, water, or nitrogen is introduced from a source under pressure tangentially into the portion 20, to form a vortex surrounding and confining the arc and increasing its current density and temperature. When water is introduced, the resulting plasma contains water vapour, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon from the electrodes, electrons, and ions. The plasma passes out through an aperture in electrode 17. Part of the cylindrical wall 29 is transparent to permit observation of the arc. Electrode 16 is sealed at 36 to plate 30, and fluid escaping between the electrode and wall 34 is drained at 35.
