Abstract

1,171,175. Welding by fusion. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 16 Nov., 1966 [17 Nov., 1965] No. 51398/66. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] The arrangement shown with a concave, glow discharge, electron beam producing cathode 14 of annular configuration (see Division H1) and a central workpiece may be inverted with the cathode facing outwardly for use in welding the inside of a pipe. The arrangement shown may be used to butt-weld two stainless steel tubes. A suitable gas is argon at a pressure of 200 microns Hg, the applied voltage being 8000 volts. An insulating or conductive shield 12 surrounds the cathode.
