Abstract

1,123,397. Arc radiation torches. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 3 June, 1966 [7 June, 1965], No. 24754/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] A radiation torch comprises a tube 22 of transparent material having an electrode 10, 12 disposed at each end so as to form a chamber therebetween, a gas inlet passage directed tangentially with respect to said chamber and entering the chamber at that end thereof adjacent an axial gas outlet passage 30 provided in one only (12) of said electrodes. In the arrangement shown a plurality of tangential apertures are connected by an annular chamber 26 to an inlet 24. Electrode 10 may be of tungsten or thoriated tungsten and electrode 12 of copper. Both electrodes may be watercooled. The torch may operate on D.C. or A.C. and the gas may be argon, xenon or krypton. To increase the arc-intensity rare earths may be injected in powder form or a rod of rare earth may be used as a consumable electrode 10.
