Abstract
981,666. Metal-vapour lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 14, 1963 [Aug. 17, 1962], No. 32099/63. Heading H1D. In a high - pressure compact source mercuryvapour discharge lamp comprising two tungsten electrodes 2, 3 having substantially conical ends arranged opposite each other so as to provide a gap a between the electrodes, the conical face 4 of one of the electrodes is formed with a bore in which is located a thoriated tungsten wire 5, the outer end of the wire being spaced from the tip of the cone by a distance b which is smaller than four times and larger than twice the gap a between the electrodes. The diameter of the bore is preferably smaller than a fifth of the maximum diameter of the conical end portion of the electrode and the wire 5 may project from the conical surface 4 by a distance of not more than one-twentieth of the said maximum diameter. Grooves 6 are provided in the electrode 3 to reduce heat conduction. In operation the arc starts at the wire 5 and then transfers to the tip of the cone.
