Abstract

691,316. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., BEESON, E. J. G., and WEBB, A. A. March 6, 1951 [March 30, 1950], No. 8004/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(i). Each electrode of a discharge lamp has a tip in the form of a cone with a hemispherical end, said tips facing each other; the electrodes are of tungsten containing 3-5 per cent thoria, and may be massive, or slender rods. The lamp is of the compact source type with an electrode spacing of 3-5 mm., and is filled with a rare gas, e.g. xenon, possibly admixed with hydrogen, at ¢-2 atmospheres. With a xenon filling, the pressure is such that 2000 volts D.C. will not cause the discharge to strike until a pulse is applied to a starting electrode. The discharge may be continuous or an intermittent flash, and owing to the shape of the electrodes is localised at the tips, so that its path is always constant; thus the lamp can be accurately located relatively to an optical system.
