Abstract

1388702 Discharge apparatus C GRAF VON BERCKHEIM 4 Oct 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 46361/73 Heading H1X Apparatus as described in Specification 1,177,891 for the generation of unipolar air ions in which at least one wire 16 bears against the envelope of a gas discharge lamp is modified in that the lamp is a glow lamp and the wire bears against a region of the envelope from which at least one electrode 7 is spaced by a distance of less than 10 mm. In the arrangement shown a lamp 1 incorporating a series resistor 6 in its base 4 is pushed through an opening 2 in a plate 3 and screwed into a socket 5. The wire 16 is held by a carrier 18 supported by an insulator 19 on the cover plate 3. A part spherical electrode 7 and a ring electrode 9 are located less than 10 mm. and preferably less than 7 mm. from the hemispherical end wall 13. For D.C. working with the electrode 7 as cathode, the point 17 of the wire 16 can be located anywhere in a zone above the line AA. For A.C. working the zone is extended to the line BB. In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) a cylindrical lamp envelope containing two longitudinally spaced semi-cylindrical electrodes is 6 mm. in diameter so the wire can be applied to any point on the periphery of the envelope.
