Abstract

639,584. Discharge apparatus. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Aug. 1, 1947, No. 21076. Convention date, May 23, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] A pair of electrodes, which are supported on the stem of a discharge device. and are coated externally with electron-emissive material, comprise like halves of a frustoconical structure, the longitudinal adjacent edges of which are spaced apart a short distance. A glow discharge lamp has two wires which are sealed in a stem 8 and are spot-welded, each at one point, within crimped wings 26 of the electrodes 2, 3 which may be provided with strengthening ribs 29. The electrode structure is arranged to extend over the stem 8 and in such manner that the apex lies within the bulb. A ballast resistance is housed within the stem 'which is provided with an exhaust tube 15. The electrodes may be coated externally with one or more oxides of alkaline earth metals and internally with a getter such as zirconium or titanium powder which reduce electron emission. The bulb may be coated with fluorescent material.
