Abstract
708,636. Cold-cathode tubes. HIVAC, Ltd. Feb. 25, 1952 [Feb. 23, 1951], No. 4501/51. Class 39(1) The breakdown voltage of a cold-cathode gas-filled trigger tube is increased by arranging that the extremity of one of the main electrodes terminates slightly short of the end of a sleeve of insulating material which encloses the whole of the said electrode and intercepts the direct path between the enclosed electrode and any of the other electrodes. In the tube shown, the end of the wire anode 10 is located a short distance, of the order of 1 to 2 mm. from the end of the surrounding sleeve I which is made, for example, of glass. The trigger electrode comprises two wire rings 15 spaced apart by wires 17 and supported from the pinch 14 by wires 16. Alternatively a single wire ring trigger electrode may be used. The cathode 12 is a short metal cylinder supported by wires 13 and is preferably coated on its inner surface with material having a low work function. The tube is filled with a mixture of neon and argon.
