Abstract
1,012,229. Glow-discharge lamps. MULLARD Ltd. June 27, 1963 [Oct. 5, 1962], No. 37802/62. Heading H1D. A cold-cathode glow-discharge current-indicator tube has longitudinally extending parallel anode A and cathode K electrodes, wherein at one end of the electrode assembly the cathode has a priming portion J forming a priming discharge gap at which in operation one end of the discharge rests. The priming portion may be a loop in the cathode wire as shown, or, alternatively, the priming portion may consist of a piece of material of lower work function, e.g. zirconium, secured to the cathode, e.g. of molybdenum. The tube is filled with neon or neon/argon mixture at a pressure of 20-30 mms. of mercury. The inner surface of the envelope has a sputtered metal layer of cathode material, a portion of which, when viewed from the cathode is in the shadow of the anode and so forms a window in the layer. The free end of the cathode is supported relative to the anode, Fig. 5 (not shown), by securing a glass bead to the free end of the anode, the end of the cathode being held in a ceramic tube embedded in the bead.
