Abstract

1,038,698. Spark apparatus. EDGERTON, GERMESHAUSEN & GRIER Inc. Aug. 1, 1963 [Aug. 22, 1962], No. 30496/63. Headings H1D and H1X. A spark gap apparatus includes a pair of elongated electrodes which are spaced apart by a distance which is substantially uniform along their length, and are connectable to a high voltage source in such a manner that the magnetic field set up by the discharge current causes the discharge points to travel along the length of the pair of electrodes, whereby to distribute the effect of electrode erosion. Cylindrical electrode 20 is sealed within an envelope formed by the outer tubular electrode 10 and its ceramic support tube 18, a spark being initiated by a pulse applied to the trigger electrode 11, and thereafter being swept to the right along the electrodes by the magnetic field of the discharge current supplied through terminals A and C. The envelope may be gas-filled or evacuated to 10<SP>-7</SP> mm. mercury. In a fourth embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the trigger electrode is in the form of a ring, or a plurality of spaced electrodes arranged in a plane, and a solenoid is mounted around electrode 10, providing an axial magnetic field to cause the spark to pursue a helical path. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the electrodes are mounted in air, and one in the form of a pair of parallel rods.
