Abstract
786,286. Ionization counters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. March 9, 1956 [March 11, 1955], No. 7234/55. Class 39(1). A cathode 5, Fig. 1, in an ionization counter tube is made as a continuous length or lengths of wire without joints where field emission could occur. As shown the whole wire including leads 11, 12 is continuous to the outside of the tube, but joints need only be avoided in the actual close-wound portion capable of acting as a cathode. The tube shown is of the type having two cathodes surrounding different effective volumes with a common anode 2, the second cathode 4 being a plain cylinder. In another form the wire cathode 14 has only one lead, the free end 16 being screened from the anode by glass sleeve 17. The filling may be neon and 1 per cent argon at 8 cms. with addition of bromine at 1 mm. Dimensions of electrodes are given for a gamma-ray detector sensitive to two ranges, of 10 and 200 Rontgens per hour respectively.
