Abstract

780,828. Discharge apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 4, 1955 [July 7, 1955], No. 19261/55. Class 39(1). In a magnetron type ionization manometer the cathode consists of two circular plates 3 and 4 connected together outside the tube and the anode is a wide-mesh (2 x 2 mm.) cylindrical grid 5 which is surrounded by a conductive cylinder 6 of a diameter one and a half times to twice that of the anode. The current flowing to the cylinder 6 is a measure of the pressure. Curves are given showing the variation of current when a voltage of 2000v. is applied to the anode 5 and a voltage of 500v. or 1000v. is applied to the cylinder 6. By this one change of the voltage applied to the cylinder 6 pressures of argon or air can be measured over a range of from 2 x 10<SP>-4</SP> to 1 mm. For lower pressures the cylinder 6 may be connected to the anode 5 and a voltage of 2000v. applied to both, to provide apparatus functioning in the same way as a previously known arrangement.
