Abstract

678,695. Electric tests. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 20, 1951, No. 9269/51. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (a)] Apparatus for determining the degree of vacuum in a low pressure system comprises a cold-cathode ionization chamber in which the degree of ionization of the residual gas is increased before being measured. The ionization chamber is adapted for use with a magnetic field which causes the electrons to follow helicoidal paths and thus increases the probability of an ionizing collision, and comprises a cathode 8 surrounding an elongated anode 12 and provided intermediate its ends with protrusions, such as apertured baffle plates 11, which provide field emission surfaces while at the same time dividing the anode-cathode space into separate chambers within which the electrons may travel freely with an axial component of velocity. The electrodes are supported by mica discs 9, 10, which are apertured so as to present a small resistance to flow of gas through the tube which method may be used instead of single connection to tube 6. Dimensions and working data are given for a tube measuring pressures in the range 10<SP>-3</SP> to 10<SP>-7</SP> mm.
