Abstract

542,390. Electron-oscillators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and MOTZ, H. July 5, 1940, No. 11306. [Class 39 (i)] In electron velocity modulation apparatus such as described in Specifications 516,750, 518,015 and 537,490, the electron beam is produced in a gaseous atmosphere which is ionized by electronic impact or by contact with a hot surface having a work function which is larger than the ionization potential of the gas to be ionized. As shown a velocity-modulation device comprises two toroidal resonators R, Rl, with a back coupling L1, and gaps G through which passes a beam of electrons generated by a cathode K and focusing electrode system. A mass B of barium or barium berylliate or other compounds in a container C is vapourized by a heater H, and the vapour is ionized by contact with hot wires W of oxidized tungsten &c., and the ions are formed into a beam by a focusing electrode system Fl, directed towards the cathode. Caesium may be used instead of barium. Alternatively a drop of mercury may be introduced into the evacuated envelope so as to obtain a pressure of 10<SP>-5</SP>-10<SP>-3</SP> mm. of mercury under operating conditions. Specification 542,389 also is referred to.
