Microphones and variableresistance transmitters. - Sound-waves passing across the ionized space between the end of the funnel t, which is connected to the positive plate of a battery b2, and an incandescent cathode k heated by a battery b1, cause the resistance of the intervening gap or gaseous discharge path to be correspondingly varied. The incandescent cathode is preferably coated with materials that facilitate ionization; or other special means such as R÷ntgen or Becquerel rays, or a high temperature may be employed in order to ionize the gap. In a modified form, the end of the funnel t carries a diaphragm on which is mounted an anode plate. As the diaphragm vibrates under the impact of the impressed sound-waves, the effective distance between the anode plate and the glowing cathode alters, thus setting up corresponding variations in the anode current. The resulting current-variations may be received or amplified by a telephone or coupling- resistance w.
