Abstract
611,414. Microphones. WIGAN, E. R. Nov. 6, 1945, No. 29607. [Class 40 (iv)] In a carbon granule microphone in which the granular material surrounds the electrode assembly, a conical moving electrode 8, Fig. 1, formed as part of the diaphragm 2, is embraced by a conical fixed electrode 10 slotted to form spaced fingers 12 and having a cavity 13 at its apex. The granular material may pass between the fingers of the fixed electrode to fill the inter-electrode space in all positions of the microphone, the cavity 13 providing a supply of granules when the microphone is turned on its face. The granules are retained in place by silk washers 14 and are insulated from the metal case 1 and parts of the electrodes other than their opposed conical surfaces by covering such parts with insulating paint. An alternative form of fixed electrode shown in Fig. 2 comprises a hollow cylindrical member with fingers 22 bent down into conical formation.
