Abstract

366,221. Microphones. ERICSSON TELEPHONES, Ltd., 67, Kingsway, London, and MORRIS, J., 85, City Road, Lenton, Nottingham. Dec. 17, 1930, No. 38060. [Class 40 (iv).] A carbon granule microphone comprises a substantially hemispherical granule chamber and a fixed electrode insulated therefrom. As shown, the microphone comprises a metal case 1, a main conical diaphragm 2 and an auxiliary diaphragm 3, the diaphragm 2 being clamped to the case by a ring 4 with a paper &c. washer 5 between it and the case, whilst the diaphragm 3 is clamped to the case by ring 6. The two diaphragms are connected at their centres by a screw 7 and nuts 8, 9 so that in their normal positions they are substantially free from strain. If the diaphragm 3 is of mica or other nonconducting material, a lead 10 is provided to connect the screw 7 electrically to the case. The rear portion of screw 7 carries the moving carbon electrode 11 situated within the substantially hemispherical granule chamber 12, the fixed electrode 13 being mounted on a support 14 screwed to the part 15 which, with nut 16, serves to fix it to the case 1. Washers 17, 18 insulate the fixed electrode from the case and a perforated cap 19 protects the diaphragm 2. The weight of the granules is preferably substantially equal to that of the moving system and the size and disposition of the electrodes and the granule chamber and the quantity of granules are such that there is no position of the microphone in which the conducting path from one electrode to the other can be broken.
