= PATENT OFFICE. I
'RASMUS" HANSEN, o's cmcmo, I'LLiNoI's, itSSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MILLER BELFIEIJD,
Too/ll whom it may concern:
= Be it known'that I, RASMUS HANsnN; a;
subject of theiKing of Denmark,- res'ding at 1 Chicago, in the county of Cook and. tjate ,of
Illinois, have invented a certain in :W and useful Improvement in Transmitters, of which the following isa full, clear, concise,- and exact'description, reference be' had to the; accompan" g rawings, forming a .10 part of this" speciiih a itionl My ,inventign relates to telephone transmitters'of..theinicrophone variety.
;objects of'the' invention are to Prominent provide a simple, practical and effective.
transmitter of the above class; to increase theefiicien'cy and effectiveness of -the same; andt'o reduce the expense of manufacture.
In'the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is alongitudinal section of the transmitter embodymgmy present invention; Fig. 2- is a. transverse section of the same on line 2 ,2'
1 and Fig. 3 is, a transverse section on line-3+3 in Fig.1. The transmitter shown in the drawings 'for the purpose of carrying out my in-'ven 35. 1s' arranged at the front of the chamber, and
anotherelectrode 8 is arranged-at'the rear of the same. 1 A mica or similar diaphragm 9 .is arranged across the mouth of the chamher, being conveniently held in place by av threadedwasher or ring 10. The rear eectrodei 8 is provided with. a rearwardl e;- tendingpin or spindle. 11, and on t s. 1s placed a small nut 12 which serves to secure the electrode and mica diaphragm 9 together.
i A main diaphragm 13 is arrangedin the rear of the-parts above described, being'held to. the: rear of the base 2'by s ring clips or fin ers 14,14, and insulated om the piece 2 y suitable insulating rings '13". The
BOfinger 14? makes' electrical connection with the diaphra 13 and is insulated from the piece 2;. an the finger 14 is insulated from the diaphragm 13 and makes electrical connectionwith the piece 2. This diaphragm 13' is also secured to the pin or spindle 11, I

ple construction bein supplemental diaphr which said pin-passes, and a set-screw in said lug-for locking said pin in adjusted position,
Patented Nov. 26. 1907.
and arran ementis made for permitting relative ad ustment between the two, a simto secure a lug or small block 15 to the diaphragm 13 and proi vide' the same with an adjusting scr'ew'lfi adapted to engage the spindle. 11. -Elec,- trical connection is made byconnec-tin'g con-- ductors with the fingers 14 and 14, the cur-" rent passingv from one of them to the diaphrag'm 13, thence to the spindle 11, electrode 8, ranular carbon 6, electrode 7, piece 2, to theother finger. The rear piece or. casin 3 can be provided with any suitable shan or tail piece 17 through which the conductors- 18, 18, can be led.
It will be seen that the foregoing: trans-- mitter is very siinple and cheap n construction, and at the sametime it will have a u very effective microphone operation.
- What I claim as my invention is:-
.1. In a telephone transmitter, the combination with the main and sup lemental diaphragms, of a pair of electro, es, a chamber contamm'g. granular material with whichthe electrodes cooperate, a connection between the main and supplemental diaphragms, secured to one of the same, aimember on the other diaphragm slidingly connected with said connection, and means for locking the same in adjusted position.
I 2. In a telephone transmitteiythe combination with the main and sup lemental diaphragins, of a pair of electro es, a chamber 1 contalnmg granular material with which said electrodes 00?) erate, a pin secured to the 'aphr'agm', a lug on the main agm having anaperture through 3 a telephone transmitter, the combination of a main and as'upplemental diaphragm, a chamber formed 1n the casing of 1 the transmitter'and provided with material, said chamber being close b .the sup lemental diaphragm, two electro es in sai chamber, one secured to one wall thereof and the'other secured to sail supplemental anular g diaphragm, a connection extending between the supplemental and main diaphragms, a collar on said connection, said collar being connected with the main diaphragm, and an adjusting screw in said collar for permitting adjustment of the same along the connection, substantially as described.
4. In a telephone transmitter, the combimain and supplemental diaphragms, subargement' 4. having a chamber containing pin 11, and a casing 3 attached to the piece 2,
nation of a chamber for granular material, I port between the diaphragm and mouthcarried by'the casing, amain diaphragm situ- 1 piece, a cup carrying an electrode secured toated behind. said chamber, a supplemental said sup ort, granular carbon in said cup bediaphragm carrying-an electrode located in said chamber, and a connection between the adap ted to hold the cup and tie electrode carried thereby, while permitting the passage of sound waves to the diaphragm to cause the vibration of the latter.
7. A telephone transmitter comprising a mouth-piece, a main diaphragm, a cup containing granular material, located between the mouth-piece and the main diaphragm, electrodes in said cup, and a connection between one of said electrodes and the main diaphragm, said cup being supported to permit sound waves to act upon the diaphragm beyond it.
' In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 29th day of November, A. D.
stantially as described.
5. A transmitter, comprismg a mouth recs 1, a front piece 2 provided with an engranular material, an electrode in the rear of said chamber, a supplemental diaphragm 9 closing said chamber, an electrode 8 attached to said diaphragmd), a pin 11 extending from said electrode 8, a= main diaphragm 13 arranged at the rear of the piece 2, a lug carried by the main diaphragm, and provided with an adjusting screw adapted to engage said substantially as described. 1902. y
6. In a tele hone transmitter the combination of a suitable casing and inouth-piece RASMUS HANSEN therefor, a sound vibrateddiaphragm mount- Witnesses ed in said casing, an electrode secured to said A. MILLER BELFIELD, diaphragm and movable therewith, a sup- 1. C. LEE.
