Abstract
570,511. Gas-blast switches. WHITNEY, W. B., and BRITISH ELECTRICAL & ALLIED INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 14, 1943, No. 20979. [Class 38 (v)] The chamber 12 formed of an insulating member 13 having a quartz or fibre liner 13a is closed below by a perforated metal plate 14 and above by a mushroom valve 15, in which is a vent 17. The vent-member may be of conducting material so as to serve as a contact. but, as shown, is of insulating material and receives a hollow contact 19 apertured at 2 to form a gas-vent. Either contact 18 or 19 may be fixed and the other movable, but the Specification refers also to both contacts being movable and vented. With this arrangement. excess pressures set up at current-maxima in the arcing chamber 12 are relieved through the valve 15; the extraneous blast, which may be derived from a reservoir, or mechanically, or from the firing of a cartridge, subsequently passing from feed chamber 23 through the perforations in plate 14 acting to scour the chamber 12 at current-zero. With a ratio of inletthroat area to vent-throat area of 1 : 2, the absolute pressure in the feed chamber, arcing chamber, and exhaust-side of the vent, assuming no arc and opened electrodes, are 5 : 2.2 : 1, whereas with an inlet-to-vent ratio 1 : 3, the pressures, are 7 : 2 : 1. The strength-of spring 16 is such that it requires 15lbs/ins.' above atmospheric to lift it, so allowing a margin of five atmospheres rise within chamber 12 in order to attain the feed-chamber pressure last set out. Various other numerical figures relating to the spring and valve, and a formula for the size of arcing chamber, are given. The Specification refers also to cross-blast arrangements, to the provision of isolating switches or otherwise enlarging the gap after arc-extinction, to blasts derived from gas-producing material heated by an arc in an auxiliary circuit, and to Specifications 278,764, [Class 38 (v)], 375,808, 398,213 and 401,013.
