In a transmitter of the carbon-granule type, the diaphragm 7 has a central electrode portion 8 co-operating with the carbon chamber which contains two coaxial fixed electrodes 9 and 10 mounted on a coaxial insulating member 11 which protrudes into the carbon chamber and restricts the volume of the carbon granules in a region between the two fixed electrodes. Radial grooves may be cut in the surface of the insulating member 11, and an insulating enamel may be applied to the cylindrical sides of the front electrode 8 and of the annular fixed electrode 10. The transmitter may be used as a high-resistance series type, in which the current path extends between the two fixed electrodes 9 and 10, or as a conventional low-resistance instrument with the two fixed electrodes connected in parallel to one terminal and the moving electrode 8 connected to another terminal.
