Abstract
705,523. Microphones. SIEMENS BROS. & CO., Ltd. July 17, 1952 [Oct. 12, 1951], No. 23853/51. Class 40 (4) The casing of a carbon granule microphone comprises a cylindrical outer part 1, which has a flange 2 supporting the diaphragm 8 and is bonded by insulating material 7, such as a thermoplastic, to a cup-shaped inner part 3 which forms the wall of the granule chamber and supports on its base the back electrode 17. A hemispherical front electrode 9 fits into an aperture in the centre of the diaphragm 8, and the only opening into the granule chamber is closed by the front electrode, the diaphragm, and washers 22, 23. The electrical paths between the wall of the granule chamber and the front electrode are long compared with the shortest direct paths between the two electrodes in order to minimise leakage. Each part 1, 3 of the casing has a lug such as 26 formed integrally with it to enable connection to be made to the electrodes, the lug connecting with the inner part 3 being insulated from the outer part 1. A guard plate 13 and cover plate 14 are provided with staggered perforations. The granule chamber is airtight and watertight, and excessive distortion of the diaphragm due to low ambient pressure may be prevented by a pillar 16 secured to the guard plate 13. This feature is claimed in Specification 705,549.
