Abstract

1329698 Microphones G H METSON 15 Dec 1970 [25 Nov 1969] 57681/69 Heading H4J A carbon microphone inset for a telephone handset comprises a cup-shaped body 11 containing a granule chamber 1 and a rim clamped diaphragm 6. A pressure equalising vent 16 is provided in the easing at the rear of the diaphragm and is closed by a flexible damp-proof bag of e.g. PVC or polythene. The cavity 18 above the vent may be filled with a felt plug. The bag may alternatively be located within the air chamber defined by casing wall 11 and inner support member 7, the vent hole in this case being located off the axis of the inset. In another alternative, a separately vented chamber is formed within the just-defined chamber and the bag is located within this separate chamber and is in communication with the vent 16 via an external passageway (Fig. 2, not shown). Granule chamber 1 is closed by a nylon plug 5 which is held in place by the felt plug in cavity 18. The lower electrode 3 is clamped between fabric washers 9, 10. An apertured guard plate 12 has its peripheral edges 13 turned over to secure it to casing 11. A flexible cover 14 protects the main diaphragm 6. Acoustic mass is provided by three apertures 21 and a felt washer 22.
