Abstract

1289993 Ear protectors COSMOCORD Ltd 7 Aug 1970 [7 Aug 1969] 39542/69 Heading A3V [Also in Division H4] An earpiece for preventing extraneous sounds from entering the ear comprises inner 6 and outer 21 rigid, non-porous, cup-shaped, hollow shells whose edge porions lie in a common plane 2 and which contain therebetween sound absorbing material 22, e.g. polyethylene foam or textile wadding, and a transducer 8. The lower rear portion of the outer shell is recessed at 9 for receiving a plug-in amplifier module which may have particular frequency or amplitude limiting chracateristics and may form part of a communication circuit incorporating for example a microphone, (Fig. 5, not shown). The upper rear portion of the outer shell is shaped concavely (part-cylindrical) so that this part of the earpiece can be accommodated under a protective helmet. The shells are joined by a (possibly integral) plate in the plane 2. A partly-liquid-filled or foam-filled cushion 3 is provided. A battery 13 may be located in a receptacle below as at the corners of recess 9. A switch may be provided at one side of the battery housing, the switch knob being apertured so that its on/off state can be determined by a suitable indicator located behind the aperture. Receptacles may be provided for spare batteries. Two such earpieces may be carried by a headband.
