Abstract

801,352. Condenser microphones. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 14,1955 [Oct. 16, 1953], No. 14482/57. Divided out of 801,351. Class 40 (4). In a condenser microphone a single solid conducting back electrode 40 has two electrically independent diaphragms 45, one on either side thereof, the back electrode having air loading pockets 42 facing each diaphragm and intercommunicating channels 43 between the two diaphragms, and each diaphragm 45 consists of an insulating membrane, conductive on its outer surface 46, stretched across a ring member 48 and spaced from the back electrode by an annular washer 47. Each face of electrode 40 has a circular groove 41, Figs. 1, 3, of semicircular profile, and the annular washer 47 is just sufficiently thick to prevent the diaphragm touching the electrode during vibration. A clamping ring 48 completes the diaphragm assembly. The lower diaphragm assembly is shown complete at 49. The diaphragms and the passages 43 are so designed that the phase change of waves passing from one diaphragm to the other is square to that due to passage round the outside of the microphone so that one diaphragm will act as a pressure gradient transducer for sounds from the " front " and will be unaffected by those from the " back." With both diaphragms connected in circuit, however, an omnidirectional response is obtained.
