Abstract

1,033,001. Electrostatic transducers. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. May 16, 1963 [May 22, 1962], No. 19468/63. Heading H4J. An electrostatic transducer comprises two plane conductive electrodes 15, 16 between which a multi-layer permanently polarized diaphragm 10 is free to vibrate. In the telephone receiver described, brass electrodes 15, 16 having mutually aligned holes therein are restrained between rings 25, 26 by means of adjustment rings 17, 18 and rubber rings 20, 21 located in aluminium clamping members 11, 12 and the diaphragm is clamped at its periphery by the groove and socket arrangement 13, 14. The diaphragm which is of the type described in Specification 1,014,781, consists of several layers of polyethylene terephthalate at least one of which is coated with aluminium and it is prepolarized by supporting it between electrodes carrying a potential of 3500 volts and subjecting it to a temperature of 120‹ C. for 15 minutes after which the temperature is gradually reduced to room temperature. The resultant electret has a polarization equivalent to that produced by a 200 volt bias supply. The electrodes are fed from a push-pull signal source, the diaphragm being connected to a neutral point of the source. A suitable balanced circuit configuration (transformer/ capacitor bridge) is depicted in Fig. 4 (not shown). ). The use of such a transducer as a highfrequency tweeter is also discussed.
