Abstract
863,659. Loudspeakers; diaphragms. PHILCO CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1959 [Jan. 17, 1958], No. 1648/59. Class 40 (4). The diaphragm 10 of an electrostatic loudspeaker is stretched over a curved support in the form of a lattice of insulating material which in effect divides the diaphragm into a number of independent elongated portions 24. The major dimension of each portion 24 is oblique to the axis or axes of the curved diaphragm which in this case is cylindrical. The major dimension is also oblique to the line of maximum stress in the diaphragm. In Fig. 1, the diaphragm is held between two spacing lattices 11, 12 on two perforated plates 13, 14 of electrically conductive material. The diaphragm comprises a conductive layer 19 between two insulating layers 25, 26 which are cemented to the spacers 11, 12. Leads 20, 21, 22 are connected respectively to the conductive layer 19 of the diaphragm and to lugs 15, 16 on the plates 13, 14. The diaphragm is tensioned as described in Specification 795,962. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the diaphragm 42 is spaced from a single curved and perforation plate 40 by oblique spacing threads 41.
