472,549. Microphones. BRAUNMUHL, H. J. VON, and WEBER, W. March 24, 1936, No. 8809. Convention date, April 4, 1935. [Class 40 (iv)] A condenser microphone comprises a movable diaphragm or membrane constrained only at its edges and exposed to the sound waves directly or indirectly on both sides by means of a few widely spaced apertures in a fixed plate, the distance between the diaphragm and the fixed plate being so small in relation to the diameter of the perforations and their spacing that the frictional control applied to the diaphragm is high in comparison with the mass and elasticity control over the greater part of the frequency range to be transmitted. As shown, the diaphragm M is mounted between a perforated electrode E and a similar plate P provided with correspondingly arranged apertures. The distance between the diaphragm and the electrode may be approximately one fiftieth of that between the perforations in the electrode. In order to increase the response at low frequencies, a closed chamber L is connected by a tube K with the space adjacent the centre of the diaphragm. The diameter of the microphone is approximately equal to the wave-length of the highest frequency to be transmitted. The perforated plate P may form a second electrode of the microphone and the damped natural frequency of the diaphragm may be approximately equal to that at the middle of the frequency range to be transmitted.
