Abstract

655,574. Microphones. WIGGINS, A. M. Dec. 23, 1947, No. 34063. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 23, 1948.] Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (iv)] A directional microphone comprises at least two diaphragms each mounted by and spanning an opening in a casing so as to form a substantially closed chamber, but only one of the diaphragms serves to translate its vibrations into electrical energy. The other diaphragm or combination of diaphragms has a mass and resistance of a value sufficient to, and constituting the main factors acting to, produce a phase-shift in sound waves impinging upon it of such a value as to render the microphone directional. The Specification contains a mathematical analysis of the mode of operation of the microphone from which the values of mass and resistance required are obtained. Piezo-electric, moving-coil, ribbon, and condenser microphone embodiments are described. Additional damping may be applied to the other diaphragm or diaphragms by means of rubber pads bearing thereon or by silk screens adjacent thereto.
