Abstract
677,883. Discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 29, 1949 [May 3, 1948], No. 12089/48. Class 39 (i). In a cold cathode gas-filled " sequence " electric discharge tube of the type described in Specification 639,827, the cathode glow is confined to the ends of the cathodes 5 facing the anode 9 by means of a " field control plate " 10, of insulating or metallic material, through which the cathodes project. The clearance between the cathodes and the plate is considerably greater than the mean free path of an electron in the gas filling, which comprises 92 per cent neon, 1 per cent argon and 7 per cent hydrogen, at a pressure of 100 mm. of mercury, but is less than the length of the cathode dark space for normal glow discharge. The anode 9 and plate 10 are mounted by means of mica separators 11 secured by support-rods 12 to the press 7.
