Abstract
908,488. Multi-gap cold-cathode tubes. ELESTA Ltd. March 23, 1960 [Dec. 9, 1959], No. 10288/60. Class 39 (1). In a glow-discharge counter tube having a number of cathodes 7 to 16, Fig. 1, arranged in sequence and obliquely towards the anode 5, the filling consists partly or wholly of hydrogen and the cathodes are U-shaped, as in Fig. 3, or loop-shaped, as in Fig. 2, in order to obtain a fast counting speed with stable discharges. In Figs. 2 and 3, the cathodes 16 consists of molybdenum wire or strips and the pins 18 of nickel which has a higher electron emissivity. This reduces the tendency of the glow discharge to spread to the pins. Depressions 21 in the insulating base-plate 20 are so dimensioned that spread of the glow discharge is inhibited even if it should spread to the pins 18. The pins are secured to the insulating plate 20 by means of cement. In Fig. 1 an outer anode 6 may be provided for counting in the opposite direction.
