Abstract

858,542. Discharge tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 25, 1957 [April 28, 1956], No. 13222/57. Class 39(1). A glow discharge tube for use in switching networks has a conductor 4, 5 connected to the anode 3 so constructed and arranged with respect to a conductor 2 connected to the cathode 1 that the ignition voltage between the conductors 5 and 2 in the cold state of the tube is equal to the ignition voltage between the anode 3 and the cathode 1 in the hot state of the tube. The loop 5 of the conductor 4 is situated in a region of the tube wherein substantially no density variation of the filling occurs between the cold and hot states of the tube. An auxiliary cathode 6 is screened by a plate 7 connected to the conductor 4 and an auxiliary discharge of 1ÁA is maintained therebetween to compensate for ignition delay. The anode 3 terminates in a point having a radius of curvature of 0À05 mm. The cathode 1 is U-shaped and of molybdenum. Dimensions are stated. The filling is neon at a pressure of 48 mms. in a volume 6 cms<SP>3</SP>.
