Abstract
836,710. Cold cathode discharge tubes. WERK FUR SIGNAL-UND SICHERUNGSTECHNIK VEB. June 8, 1956, No. 17792/56. Class 39(1). A cold cathode discharge tube has at least one grid between an anode and the cathode and the spacing between the grid windings and the distance between the anode and the control grid is smaller, whereas the distance between the cathode and the control grid is greater, than the length of the free path of the electrons under the selected operating conditions, it being possible thereby to both initiate and terminate the gas discharge by altering the voltage on the control grid, with a direct voltage on the anode. The tube shown in Fig. 3 has two girds 5, 9, a cold cathode 4, an anode 6 and an auxiliary starting anode 3. Using neon at a pressure of 3 torr the freepath lengths of the electrons is about 225 microns and the grid openings are less than 200 microns. With two or more grids the spacing between the anode and its adjacent grid is at least twice the spacing between adjacent grids and the spacing between the cathode and its adjacent control grid is at least twice the distance between the anode and its adjacent grid.
