Abstract

822,560. Ionization chambers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 29, 1956 [March 31, 1955], No. 9861/56. Class 39(1). A radiation responsive device comprises a gasfilled ionization chamber containing a cathode 3 and an anode 5, at least a portion of the wall of the chamber being transparent to radiation, means for applying a potential difference between the anode and cathode to cause spacecharge current flow in the absence of radiation, but a much larger current flow in the presence of ionizing radiation, and means 12 for indicating the magnitude of the current. The chamber is preferably filled with a gas having a high electron mobility coefficient, e.g. a rare gas such as argon or neon at atmospheric pressure, to which may be added a trace of a gas having large molecules to which electrons do not readily attach themselves, such as alcohol or ether, to increase the output current by further slowing down the positive ions.
