747,977. Heavy-ion-beam tubes; Geiger counters. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 23, 1953 [Dec. 30, 1952], No. 35754/53. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL (b)] In a mass spectrometer the ions strike a fluorescent screen and generate light pulses which are converted into current pulses by a photo - sensitive counter tube which may be inside or outside the envelope of the spectrometer; the window 8 of the counter tube 5 forms part of the envelope wall. The fluorescent screen may consist of a single fluorescent crystal or may comprise fluorescent material. The window 8 may be coated with fluorescent material to form the screen. In an arrangement with the counter tube entirely outside the envelope of the spectrometer, the fluorescent screen is sealed in the envelope wall.
