Abstract

1,115,481. Image intensifier tubes; discharging static electricity from envelopes thereof. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. 8 Dec., 1965 [12 Dec., 1964], No.50663/64. Headings HID and H1X. An image intensifier tube in which the output window, e.g. a mica Lenard window, is at earth potential while the input window is at high negative potential has the input window provided with a light transparent cover-plate of high resistivity insulating material, e.g. silica, to reduce leakage current and consequent corona discharge at the input window. To further reduce these effects the tube, e.g. of soda glass, may be surrounded by an outer casing of insulating material and the space between tube and casing filled with insulating encapsulating material. In addition, the silica plate may have a marginal coating of metal or graphite, may be surrounded by an opaque projecting mask or hood and may have affixed to it a radio-active foil, e.g. strontium-90, to produce ionization of the air in its immediate neighbourhood. The negative high tension line to the photo-cathode on the input window extends the length of the tube between the tube and the casing.
