Abstract
685,725. Viewing objects by infra-red rays. MITZAKIS, A. V. M. July 11, 1951 [July 14, 1950], No. 17725/50. Class 40 (iii). An optical projection and viewing apparatus for use in the turrets of tanks and other vehicles or ships of the type having a light projector mounted therein includes an infra-red screen which can be introduced into the beam of the light projector, and the turret is formed with an aperture which is normally closed by a shutter and behind which is disposed an infrared image converter. As shown in the drawings, the turret, which is rotatable, contains optical apparatus 6, 7, 9 for projecting a beam of light through an aperture 10, and a periscope 30, 31 for normal viewing. For viewing by infra-red light, a screen 40 is placed in the light beam and the observer then views by infra-red image converter 45 mounted in front of a second aperture 44. A spring-loaded shutter 46 normally closes aperture 44 and is lowered through a forward movement of the observer's seat 36 by a cable and pulley system 48, 49. This movement may also be employed to position screen 40 in the light beam. The light projector can be elevated and depressed through a few degrees by curved rack 19 engaged by a pinion 20 driven through chain 24 from handle 26. The projector pivots about 18 and a corresponding motion is imparted to the image converter, which pivots about 55, by a chain-engaging sprockets 56, 57. A counter-weight 28 is provided sliding in guides 29. Aperture 10 can be closed by shutter 11 positioned by motor 12 driving through a rack- and-pinion mechanism.. The image converter, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprises, in an evacuated envelope, a photo-cathode from which an electron image is obtained and brought to focus on a luminescent screen. The screen is viewed by means of two inclined mirrors carried on flaps 71, 72, flap 71 being made of bullet-proof steel in order to protect the observer.
