Abstract

624,344. Electron discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 4, 1947, No. 17720. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] A light-sensitive electric discharge device comprises an anode, a thermionic cathode, an electrostatic control member having a photosensitive surface facing the anode, and a heat shield for reducing the effect on the control member of the heat and light from the cathode. The heat shield comprises a metal wall member partially surrounding the cathode and a hollow tube-like member perpendicular to the wall member to provide a path for the discharge. Fig. 3 shows an exploded view of the heat shield 27 and control member 19. The cathode 8 may be supported at one end from a vitreous insulator 31 supported by the control member. The anode may be a nickel rod parallel to the cathode and the control member may comprise a nickel base with an oxide surface film on which is deposited antimony and caesium. The filling may be an inert gas such as argon or xenon at a pressure of 100-150 microns. A resistance 39 in series with the control member may be embedded in the filling compound fastening the base to the envelope.
