Abstract
1,073,161. Image converter tubes. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSONHOUSTON. Jan. 9, 1964 [Jan. 16, 1963], No. 1045/64. Heading HID. In an image converter tube, the image-forming output screen 17, Fig. 2, is near to, but spaced from, one end of the envelope 27 and the space therebetween is sealed off from the remainder of the envelope, to prevent ingress of foreign particles, by an annular dust-shield 23 in sealing engagement with the periphery of the screen and with the envelope. As shown, the screen is supported by a metallic annulus 20 sealed to one end of shield 23 and to a retainer 19 provided with a spring washer 22, the annulus 20 being peripherally supported from the envelope. The other end 26 of shield 23 is resilient so as to take up manufacturing tolerances. Foreign particles may be present in the tube due to dust during manufacture, electrode-soldering operations, vapour deposition of the photo-cathode layer 3, Fig. 1, and particles stripped from the luminescent input screen 2 of an X-ray image converter. The latter particles may be trapped by means of an X-ray transparent protecting sheet 7 provided over the input screen 1-3 with a strip of aluminium foil 10 sealed between the supporting flanges 8, 12. The image converter tube may be an X-ray image intensifier of the kind described in Specifications 1,060,381 and 1,060,382.
