Abstract

1,226,725. Image intensifier tubes. RCA CORPORATION. 23 May, 1969 [5 July, 1968], No. 26556/69. Heading HID. [Also in Divisions H3-H5] The fluorescent screen of an image intensifier tube is formed in two parts, one having a relatively fast rise and decay time but low efficiency and the other having relatively slow rise and decay times but a high efficiency; and means are provided for deflecting the electron image from one part to the other. Fig. 1 shows an intensifier adapted for viewing a tumour impregnated with a radio-active isotope, and includes a converter 78 of sodium iodide adapted to convert gamma rays into visible light which excites the photo-cathode 22. The image formed by the cathode is focused by a lens 32 on to an intensifier structure comprising a mica support 28 carrying on one side a fluorescent screen 26 covered by aluminium 27, and on the other side a photo-cathode 30. The output screen comprises two semicircular luminescent areas 40, 42 separated by a narrow diametral strip 44 and covered by an aluminium layer 46, the image appearing on one or other area according to the voltage applied to the deflection plates 52, 54. Normally the highspeed viewing screen 42 is observed, and when this displays useful information (instead of noise or interference) the switch 60 is actuated to transfer the image to the high efficiency screen 40 for recording on photographic apparatus (not shown). The switching may be done automatically by discriminator circuits responsive to the higher intensity display caused by the gamma rays to be observed. The layer 40 may be of zinc activated zinc sulphide, and the layer 42 of calcium magnesium silicate with cerium and lithium activators which decays to 10% brightness in 0À12 microsecond. The faceplate 14 should be as thin as possible, preferably about 0À080 inch, to avoid distortion of light passing through it, and the envelope may be formed in two halves terminating in respective metal ring flanges 18, 20 which are welded together.
