Abstract

780,819. Cathode ray tubes. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. March 8, 1955 [March 17, 1954], No. 6767/55. Class 39(1). An image intensifier comprises a photocathode 5, Fig. 1, excited directly by a light image or indirectly by an X-ray image, a reducing electron lens, e.g. electrodes 7, 8 for forming a conductivity image on B.I.C. (bombardment induced conductivity) layer 15 of target 12 and an electron beam for scanning the rear side of target 12 to read and erase the conductivity image and a load circuit 24 coupled between metal layer 14 and the scanning beam cathode the metallic layer 14 being on the side facing the input screen. The input screen 2 exposed to the X-rays comprises fluorescent (ZnCdS) layer 6 which converts the X-ray image to a light image which excites photocathode 5 (Cs-Sb) there being intervening layers of glass 4 and transparent conductive material 3. The electron image from 5 is focused down to as small a size as possible on target 12 by lens electrodes 7, 8. Target 12 comprises an open mesh 13 coated by evaporation with secondary emissive material such as K Cl or Au, an electron permeable Al layer 14 and a B.I.C. layer 15 of arsenic trisulphide. The rear face of B.I.C. layer 15 is scanned by a high velocity beam 16 from gun 18 to restore its areas to cathode potential the output signal being taken from the target 12 across resistor 24. The scanning beam 16 is controlled by aligning coil 23, focusing coil 22 and scanning coils 21. The secondary emissive layer 24 on mesh 13 gives a secondary emission ratio > 1 so that the total secondary emission ratio of the target 12 (considering both sides) is approximately unity, and lens electrode 8 collects secondary and back scattered electrons from mesh 13. A non linear amplifier is connected between the tube and a reproducing tube to enhance the contrast. The electron B.I.C. material can be Sb 2 S 3 , Se, Cd S, S, Al 2 O 3 or anthracene. If the fluorescent layer 6 is omitted then a light image can be focused on photocathode 5.
