Abstract
485,264. Electron-microscopy; cathoderay tubes. ZEISS IKON AKT.-GES. Sept. 22, 1937, No. 25732. Convention date, Oct. 2, 1936. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] For microscopically examining objects by means of electron-discharge apparatus, an image of the object is produced on a photocathode by means of short-wave radiation, and this image is magnified electron-optically. With the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the object 1 is illuminated with ultra-violet light from a mercury lamp 3, and an image is formed by an optical system 4 on a photo-cathode 5 on the inner side of a quartz window 6, at one end of an electron-discharge tube 11. Magnetic lenses 7, 8 cause the emitted electrons to produce a magnified image of the object on a fluorescent screen 9 on a transparent plate at the other end of the tube 11. A potential difference of about 50,000 volts exists between the cathode 5 and the anode 12 on the inside of the tube. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the object 22 is illuminated with rays produced by an X-ray tube 20, and an image is projected by the X-rays on to a thin metal window 23 in a vacuum tube 25. The electrons liberated at the window are concentrated by magnetic lenses 27, 28 on to a cathode 29 comprising a mosaic plate in the form of a subdivided metal layer. The charge image produced at the cathode is scanned by an oscillating electron beam 30 which is utilized, as in known television apparatus, to control an electron beam in a cathode-ray receiver of the Braun tube type, and thereby to produce a magnified image of the object on the fluorescent screen or equivalent device in the Braun tube. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates diagrammatically the means for coupling the scanning-device shown in Fig. 2 to the cathoderay receiver.
