Abstract

1461386 Image intensifier tubes AGFAGEVAERT 1 Nov 1973 [3 Nov 1972] 50828/73 Heading HID [Also in Divisions C4 G6 and H5] A method of recording a neutron image or detecting neutrons comprises irradiating with neutrons a neutron absorbing screen incorporating at least one gadolinium compound which fluoresces if struck by X-rays, the Gd being the or a "host" metal and the compound containing at least one other rare earth as activator, and recording or detecting by a photosensitive electronic light detector. The screen may be contained in an image intensifier tube (vacuum or reduced pressure type) and in contact or optically coupled such as by fibre optics or lens system with a photocathode. Focusing may be electrical and/or magnetic. Image converters are also exemplified. Phosphors are detailed, and other phosphors excitable by X-rays and/or γ-rays may be included. Metallic, glassy or granular type neutron absorbing screens may be used with the above combination including the phosphor. Many other details such as additives, grain sizes, thicknesses &c. are disclosed.
