Abstract

884,053. Secondary-electron-emissive electrodes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 22, 1959], No. 35850/59. Class 39(1) A dynode comprises a composite film supported by an outer frame 1, the film including a slack, electron-permeable supporting layer 2, where necessary a layer of conductive material 3, and a layer of secondary-electron-emissive material 4 marginally spaced from the inner edge of the frame. The arrangement is such that, upon subsequent baking, e.g. outgassing of a discharge tube, shrinkage of the emissive material causes some of the slack in the supporting layer to be taken up, but does not tear this layer away from the frame. In a preferred method of making such a dynode, an initially taut layer 2 of aluminium oxide or magnesium oxide, e.g. an anodised aluminium sheet 450Š thick, is stuck to a soda glass ring 1 and is then permanently stretched by heating to a temperature such that the expansion of the ring 1 relative to the layer 2 stretches this layer beyond its yield point. Alternatively, the layer 2 may be of gold or silver arid the frame 1 of a metal having a larger thermal coefficient of expansion. If a conductive layer 3 is required it may be of aluminium, and the emissive material may be an alkali metal halide or an alkaline earth metal halide, e.g. potassium chloride, both being applied to the supporting layer 2 by evaporation in vacuo. As shown in Fig. 6, a plurality of such dynodes 8 are mounted by means of wires 9 in an image intensifier tube.
