Abstract

1,081,513. Cathode-ray tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 6, 1965 [June 12, 1964], No. 19203/65. Heading H1D. The faceplate 20 of a cathode-ray tube, e.g. an image orthicon camera tube, is sealed to a reduced thickness (0À003 to 0À006 inch) inner portion 18 of a doubly convoluted metal frame 17 which is sealed to a metal ring 31 sealed to the tube envelope 13, the inner convolution of the frame 17 being of lesser amplitude than the outer convolution 121 and providing a resilient support for the faceplate. The faceplate may be a bundle of optical fibres or may be of soda lime optical glass or sapphire, brazed or sealed with glass frit to a frame 17 of Ti, Ta, stainless steel or alloys of Ti, Ta or chromium or Fe-Ni alloys. The frame 17 is preformed with the large convolution 21, but the smaller convolution adjacent the faceplate 20 may be formed in the reduced thickness inner portion of the frame 17 during sealing. The frame 17 is brazed or arc-welded to a metal ring which is sealed to the hard borosilicate glass envelope 13, the metal ring comprising a single member, or, as shown, two members 31, 34 of stainless steel and a magnetic alloy, respectively. Specific examples and dimensions are given.
