Abstract

695,406. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 22, 1951 [March 27, 1950], No. 6893/51. Class 39(i) An image intensifier for X-ray images has the layer which is rendered luminescent by the X-rays enclosed between two plates. The plates may be of mica 50 microns thick or of glass, and that adjacent the X-ray source may be of beryllium. The distance between the plates is 0.5-0.7 mm. As shown in Fig. 2 the plates 10, 11 enclosing a substantial layer of luminescent material 12 and are held by two telescoped metal frames 13, 14 of aluminium and an intermediate piece 17 all of which are spot-welded in position. In a modification, a tongue on the outside member 13 projects into a notch on the inner member. These assemblies are degassed in the discharge tube by local heating. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the plates are enclosed by a double bent metallic frame 2 which is hermetically sealed with glass-enamel powder after being degassed and before being arranged within the discharge tube. A photo-electric cathode is provided on the surface of plate 10, a preliminary layer of iridium or chromium being provided. The photo-electric cathode may be on a separate support.
