Abstract

1,175,599. Image intensifier tubes; electron multipliers. MULLARD Ltd. 20 Sept., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 54133/67. Heading H1D. A channel intensifier device is provided with an electron-permeable conductive membrane obturating the entrance to each channel. Fig. 2 illustrates an image intensifier wherein an aluminium layer D 500-1000 Š.U. thick is disposed adjacent the input electrode E1 of the channel multiplier section; the layer is opaque to radiation from the fluorescent screen S so that there is no need of a metal backing layer on the screen and consequently the spacing d and the voltage B2 can be reduced to give better resolution. The screen S may be laid on a plain glass or fibre optic window W. The layer D may be insulated from electrode E1 (Fig. 3, not shown) or may itself form the electrode E1 where it touches the glass matrix (Fig. 4, not shown). A photo-cathode may be spaced from the channel multiplier and focused on it by a conical anode which inverts the image (Fig. 5, not shown); the anode may be connected to the input electrode E1 or may be at a different potential. Alternatively, for an X-ray image intensifier the photo-cathode may be only 5 mm. from the channel multiplier.
