Abstract
1294604 Ion pumps ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [15 May 1970] 23619/70 Heading H1D An evacuated electron discharge tube apparatus comprises an electron discharge tube and an ion getter pumping device including a body 3 of radio-active material arranged to act as a source of power therefor, said device being either within a vacuum tight housing constituted by the envelope of the tube or within a vacuum tight housing which includes the tube envelope, an envelope for said device and a communication channel between them. The pumping device comprises a glass support 1 through which are sealed pins 7 supporting a cathode 2, a pin 8 supporting a backing plate 4 for the body 3, and a pin 9 supporting a particle receiver 5, anode 6, end a sputter shield 10. One pin 7 is connected directly to pin 8 which is connected to pin 9 through a resistor 11 e.g. of 10<SP>11</SP> ohms. At least the inner surface of cathode 2 is made of getter material, e.g. Ta or Zr or, preferably, Ti. The receiver 5 and anode 6 are also made of getter material. The plate 4 may be of Al and the shield 10 of Mo. The body 3 is preferably an α-particle emitter, e.g. Po 210 , Cm 242 or Am 241 , and may be shielded by thin steel plates (not shown), to reduce the X-ray count. Alternatively the radio-active material may be a #-emitter, e.g. H 3 absorbed in Ta, in which case the parts 5 and 3 must be interchanged. The pump combines three effects-chemical pumping by the getter material and collection of ions produced by the radio-active material and by electrons produced as a result of this ionization. An alternative embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) comprises a glass base supporting a coaxial arrangement of an anode surrounded by two grids and a cylinder with an internal film of α-emitting material and two end shields. The inner grid collects ions and the outer grid collects α particles. The film may alternatively be of #-emitting material, in which case only one grid is necessary. In either arrangement electrons orbit around the central anode. The electron discharge tube may be a high power microwave tube.
